Description
Lower Hartshay and the Cromford Canal support a wide range of birds throughout the year. Яструб малий are often seen hunting over the village and surrounding fields, while Канюк звичайний soar overhead and the occasional Шуліка рудий drifts through. Чапля сіра regularly feed along the reedbeds and canal edges, with Плиска гірська picking insects from the water margins. Ополовник звичайний, або синиця довгохвоста move through the trees in busy family parties, and Очеретянка середземноморська are frequently heard calling from dense reedbeds.
Autumn and winter bring an increase in wildfowl and passage birds, with Казарка канадська , Гуска сіра , Крижень , Чирянка мала and Свищ євразійський using the canal and nearby waters. Чайка чубата , Баранець звичайний and Пастушок may appear in wetter areas, while Мартин звичайний , Мартин сріблястий and Клуша gather on open water and fields. Thrushes are a highlight at this time of year, with Дрізд білобровий and Чикотень arriving from the continent alongside resident Дрізд співочий and Дрізд-омелюх. Mixed tit flocks, Золотомушка жовточуба , Щиглик звичайний , Чиж лісовий and Чечітка звичайна are regular, and corvids including Галка звичайна , Грак , Сорока звичайна and Сойка звичайна are ever-present.
Spring and summer see the area come alive with breeding birds and migrants. Серпокрилець чорний , Ластівка сільська and Ластівка міська feed low over the canal and reedbeds, often joined by hunting Підсоколик великий in warm weather. Reedbeds hold Очеретянка ставкова , Очеретянка лучна and Очеретянка середземноморська , while Кропив’янка прудка and Вівчарик-ковалик sing from scrub and hedgerows. Плиска гірська , Водяна курочка , Лиска звичайна , Синиця блакитна and Велика синиця regularly breed along the canal, and Жайворонок польовий can be heard over nearby fields. Occasional highlights include Чечітка мала Кобилочка-цвіркун , Кульон великий and Боривітер звичайний.
Overall, this short walk offers excellent habitat diversity and rewarding birding in all seasons, with something new to see throughout the year.

Access
Cromford Canal and Lower Hartshay are located just west of Ripley. There’s no official parking, but on-road parking is possible. Please be mindful of local houses and park considerately. Press P on the map for directions.
