Description

The system of fish ponds in the Aras River valley is the best birdwatching spot in Armenia. More than 250 bird species have been recorded here. In spring you can find here more than 80 species on a single walk. Even in winter, there's a huge diversity of birds. You should definitely visit Armash Fish Ponds if you come to Armenia.

Access

You can reach Armash Fish Ponds by car or taxi. From Yerevan, take the M2 highway to the village of Surenavan. Turn right at Surenavan – see the map for details.

You can drive around the ponds and stop at interesting spots, but I recommend exploring on foot to see as many birds as possible.

Important! Armash Fish Ponds are a border zone and private property. A visit to the ponds must be arranged in advance – at least a week before your trip. Karen Aghababyan, a wonderful local ornithologist, can help you with this (find his Facebook profile). The entrance fee is 5,000 drams per person (2026). You must bring your original passport and a copy of it.
