There are few places on this planet where a birdwatcher can witness a mass concentration of over a hundred thousand waders in their summer plumage. Westhoek is such a place. If you choose your visit carefully in May or (preferably) between the third week of July and the first week of September. You have to watch the tide (see the link below for the tides) to make sure you arrive at Westhoek 2 – 1,5 hours before high tide. As you wait on top of the dike, you will first see the masses of waders at over a kilometre distance. But as the tide slowly comes in the birds will come closer and closer. The majority will consist of Karakarınlı kumkuşu, Kızıl kumkuşu, Gümüş yağmurcun, Kıyı çamurçulluğu, Ak kumkuşu, Küçük kumkuşu, Kılıçgaga, Halkalı cılıbıt and Kervançulluğu, but among the masses of common waders rarities like Deniz düdükçünü, Sürmeli kumkuşu or even an American vagrant could be found. Witnessing such a sheer mass of birds is an experience that will stay with you forever.

Westhoek aan de Waddenzee is zo'n plek. Als je een bezoek zorgvuldig plant in mei of (bij voorkeur) tussen de derde week van juli en de eerste week van september. Je moet wel op het getij letten (zie de link beneden voor de actuele getijden) om ervoor te zorgen dat je 2 - 1,5 uur voor hoogwater in de Westhoek aankomt. Terwijl je wacht boven op de dijk vormen de steltlopers een krioelende massa aan de horizon. Maar als het tij langzaam opkomt, zullen de vogels steeds dichterbij komen, totdat je tienduizenden steltlopers hebt die vlak bij je foerageren. De meerderheid zal bestaan uit Karakarınlı kumkuşu, Kızıl kumkuşu, Gümüş yağmurcun, Kıyı çamurçulluğu, Ak kumkuşu, Küçük kumkuşu, Kılıçgaga, Halkalı cılıbıten Kervançulluğu, maar onder de massa gewone steltlopers kunnen ook zeldzaamheden als Deniz düdükçünü en Sürmeli kumkuşu voorkomen of zelfs een Amerikaanse dwaalgast. Getuige zijn van zo'n enorme massa vogels is een ervaring die je voor altijd bij zal blijven.

You can park at the small car park adjacent to the dike just outside Westhoek (See the P on the map), near the Gaya Indonesia Restaurant. Wait on the dike and watch the tide roll in.
