Description
In the Durmmeersen Nature Reserve, sand was once mined. This sand extraction left behind two pits, which have since developed into valuable ponds. These ponds are a haven for numerous waterfowl, especially in winter and spring. Isfugl and Toppand, among others, breed in the area.

Nederlands: Een mooi stukje natuur langs de Oude Kale, dat zijn de Durmmeersen. Een wandellus van 1,3 kilometer leidt je door dit stukje natuurgebied. Vroeger werd hier zand ontgonnen. Deze zandwinning liet twee putten na, die intussen uitgroeiden tot waardevolle plassen. Deze vijvers zijn vooral in de winter en het voorjaar een pleisterplaats voor tal van watervogels. Onder meer Isfugl en Toppand broeden hier.

The Durmmeersen are part of the Vinderhoutse Forest. Part of it lies within the territory of Ghent (Mariakerke and Drongen), and part within the territory of Lievegem (Vinderhoute). Several cycling junctions are located nearby. Entrance: Neerstraat, 9920 Lovendegem.

The Durmmeersen nature reserve developed spontaneously after sand extraction and the raising of large parts of it. The Oude Kale stream flows along the edge of the area. The Ghent-Bruges Canal runs parallel to this stream. On the other side, the area is bordered by the Ringvaart canal. A 1.3-kilometer walking path winds through the nature reserve.
