Description

The site covers quite a large area, based around the hamlet of Ćokići. A fertile patch of land consists of small plots of mixed agricultural land, from orchards and vine fields to potatoes and many plots left untended. Because of the diversity of cultivation the area is attractive to many species of birds - including but not limited to Vuga, Vijoglava, Siva muharica, Grmuša crvenovoljka, Crvenoglavi svračak, Rusi svračak, Grlica and Pupavac. Many of these species will be migratory so spring time is probably the best season to visit.

Obviously the land plots are privately owned so should not be entered (although permission was easly obtained if the owner were present and no damage would be caused ie in an orchard for example). There are however paths in between many of the plots and an unmade track through the area.

South East from the hamlet of Ćokići in the direction of the main road called Cesta Domovinskog Rata, which is approximately 2 km, there is a small road on the right hand side (180m before the junction with the main road). It climbs steeply up a hillside which offers a complete change of habitat and consequently species. The road winds through several hairpin bends for 3 km to reach a height of 588m but I didn't go to the top.

Some of the bird species found on this stony hillside were Žutokljuna galica, Kamenjarka, Sredozemna beloguza, and Gavran. Overhead various raptors moved north, including a Osičar.

I visited in early May so the species listed are those that I recorded whilst there. Many more species could be recorded with a longer visit or at different times of the year.

Although effectively 2 birdingplaces in one, their proximity to each other makes a visit to both on the same day quite practical.

Access

To reach the Ćokići area, take the D8 coastal road south from Omiš towards Brela, 2.9 km beyond Pisak turn left onto Cesta Domovinskog Rata towards Zadvarje. After 1.1 km at the Chapel of Our Lady, turn left towards Slime. The small mountain road is left again in 180m. The agricultural plots are a further 2 km from the chapel. Just as you are entering a small hamlet, turn right, the road is steeply downhill and almost impossible to turn directly into without manouvering. At the next bend follow the road around to the left. Limited parking at the roadside somewhere in the hamlet.
