Description

The Nature reserve Nový rybník is an important breeding site for many reedbed birds such as Bluethroat, Water Rail, Great Reed Warbler, Sedge Warbler, Reed Warbler, Western Marsh Harrier, Eurasian Moorhen or Reed Bunting. On the pond itself breed many pairs of Black-headed Gull (the only occupied place in Plzensky region), Greylag Goose, Eurasian Coot, Mallard and a few pairs of Gadwall, Common Pochard and Tufted Duck. In the rural areas and meadows breed Red-backed Shrike, Grasshopper Warbler, Marsh Warbler, Greater Whitethroat, Common Nightingale, Eurasian Skylark and many others.

During the spring migration you can see birds such as Whinchat, European Stonechat, Garganey, Black Tern and many other species of waterfowl. In last years Common Crane is a regular guest here, especially in spring time. In late summer and autumn there is little water, which is suitable for Common Snipe, Northern Lapwing, Wood Sandpiper and other waders. In winter Great Grey Shrike is a regular visitor.

Many birds come to spend a night in the reedbed, especially in the end of summer. It is the best place in the area where to watch Common Starling murmuration (thousands of birds). You can also see Barn Swallow and Western Yellow Wagtail.
