Description

Rybník Řežabinec (or Řežabinec a Řežabinecké tůně) is a national nature reserve on one of the warmest places in the southwest of the Czech Republic. The pond provides habitat suitable for many species of birds, who use this area for breeding, feeding and resting. The protected area includes Řežabinecké pond itself, along with adjacent pools on the eastern side caused by the flooding of old medieval mining holes. The pond is rather shallow, depth is around a meter, with wide growth of reed and sedge.

The area has the biggest colony of Black-headed Gull in southern Bohemia. Significant for the area is also Black-necked Grebe, whose colony is also one of the biggest in the southern Bohemia. Best time for birding the area is during April-June and in the autumn. Among the other birds you can see are Red-crested Pochard, Common Pochard, Common Goldeneye, Eurasian Spoonbill, Western Marsh Harrier, Water Rail, Spotted Crake, Little Crake, Common Tern, Red Kite, Golden Oriole, Sedge Warbler, Great Reed Warbler, Common Nightingale and Bluethroat. Also White-tailed Eagle regularly visits the pond.

Access

From the village of Ražice you can reach the southeastern edge of the Řežabinec pond along the asphalt road, where it is possible to park the car. From there the reserve can be explored by walking a two and a half kilometers long nature trail with information panels about the pond and wetland fauna and flora. The path leads around the dam of the pond, where you pass a stone landmark from 1702. The trail will take you to a wooden 7 meter high observation tower which is freely accessible to the public. The trail continues along the Řežabinec pond to its dam, where it ends. You can walk further along the green hiking trail at the quay.
