Description

Gribskov is one of Denmark's largest forests. It lies on the west side of Esrum Lake and no less than 100 different breeding species have been recorded in the woods. And the area .holds Denmark’s largest population of breeding Common Goldeneye, Green Sandpiper and Red-backed Shrike. Much of the birdlife in the forest is concentrated around the large clearings and the areas with water. The forest is very good for spotting woodpeckers. Gribskov also has a strong population of Common Raven and birds of prey. Birds you can encounter are Eurasian Treecreeper, White-tailed Eagle, Osprey, Lesser Spotted Woodpecker, Great Spotted Woodpecker, Black Woodpecker, Wood Lark, Common Crane and European Honey-buzzard.

The forest can be accessed by many forest paths. If coming by car, one can either drive in the direction of Tisvilde along Helsingevej (turn off route 19) or towards Gilleleje on route 227 (exit from route 6 between Hillerød and Helsingør - turn off onto Nødebovej). Both roads pass through Gribskov, where there are many places to park and start walks into the forest. One can also take the train from Hillerød – either in the direction of Tisvilde or Gilleleje. There are several stations and halts on both stretches. In the forest there are many spots with picnic tables and barbecue facilities. On the map several parking spots around the forest are marked. Click on a P to get directions to the parking of your choice. The circular walk indicated on the map is 10 km long. It is just one of the many walks you can choose in this huge forest.
