Description

Hovvig is a large bird sanctuary. The area is in actual fact an "unsuccessful" attempt at land reclamation which has now developed into beautiful wetlands with an abundance of birdlife and a newly established colony of Great Cormorant. Very nice bird observation towers from where one can overview most of the area. All year round White-tailed Eagle. Spring, summer and fall ducks, waders, raptors, and songbirds.

Many waterfowl breed here: Little Grebe, Great Crested Grebe, Red-necked Grebe, Mute Swan, Greylag Goose, Common Shelduck, Mallard, Common Pochard, Tufted Duck. Water Rail, Eurasian Coot, Northern Lapwing, Common Snipe. In addition Thrush Nightingale, Sedge Warbler, Reed Warbler. Bearded Tit and Penduline Tit have bred with a few pairs. There is the large Great Cormorant colony in the trees at the northwest border of the reserve.

Furthermore many more migratory birds and raptors can be seen here. To name a few birds of prey seen in the area: European Honey-buzzard, Red Kite, White-tailed Eagle, Western Marsh Harrier, Hen Harrier, Eurasian Goshawk, Sparrowhawk, Common Buzzard, Rough-legged Buzzard, Osprey , Eurasian Kestrel, Merlin and Eurasian Hobby.
