Beautiful mangrove lagoon at south end of El Gouna. At low tide the shorebirds are feeding in the mud. High tide good to see the winter gulls closer.
El Gouna is a resort on the Red Sea and an oasis in a surrounding desert. It is ideally placed for migrant birds and one rarely needs to leave the area to find some waders or other birds. The mangrove lagoon next to Abydos Marina is good on an incoming tide. There are mangrove and scrubby areas with some gardens. In 2022, 2000 new mangrove seedlings were planted. Among the birds you can encounter are Grey Plover, Kentish Plover, Common Ringed Plover, Spur-winged Lapwing, Eurasian Curlew, Slender-billed Gull, White-eyed Gull, Caspian Tern, Little Egret, Western Reef-Heron, Osprey and Northern Wheatear.
The area is best explored on foot and easy to reach by tok tok from Downtown or the marina in El Gouna.
Muddy at low tide.
