Description

Col d'Allos (elevation 2,250 m) is a high mountain pass in the Alps west of Parc National du Mercantour. The scenery is less spectacular than Col de la Cayolle (also described on this website), but still very impressive. When you make a walk from the parkingplace of Col d'Allos to the top, you cross rocky grasslands and have magnificent views. Along the way you can observe alpine fauna like chamois, marmots and of course many birds. Among the birds you can see are Rock Ptarmigan, Red-billed Chough, Yellow-billed Chough, Common Raven, Citril Finch, White-winged Snowfinch, Rock Bunting, Black Redstart, Northern Wheatear and Ring Ouzel as well as large birds of prey such as Griffon Vulture, Short-toed Snake Eagle and Golden Eagle. If you are lucky you can see Bearded Vulture that is gradually reintroduced in the area.
