The Careil pond is a migratory and wintering site for many aquatic species. Many ducks, herons, and waders can be seen here.

Description

The Careil area consists of a pond of 43 hectares, and wet meadows of 50 hectares. Two observatories allow birds to be observed up close. A great biological diversity characterizes the site. Heath, thickets, hedges, meadows, pond. There are many natural habitats. During migration many waders like Bar-tailed Godwit, Black-tailed Godwit, Red Knot, Ruff, Spotted Redshank and Common Greenshank can be seen here. In winter, many birds from northern and eastern Europe stay on the pond.

Français: L'étang de Careil est un site migratoire et d'hivernage pour de nombreuses espèces aquatiques. Canards, hérons, limicoles. Le domaine de l’étang de Careil se compose d´un étang de 43 hectares, et de prairies humides sur 50 hectares. Deux observatoires permettent d'observer les oiseaux dans de bonnes conditions. Une grande diversité biologique caractérise le site. Lande, fourrés, haies, prairies, étang… Les habitats naturels sont multiples. En hiver, de nombreux oiseaux venus du nord et de l’est de l’Europe séjournent sur l’étang.

Access

Municipality of Ifendic. Route de St Péran on the D35. Follow the signs "Espace naturel départemental". Parking in front of the old farm, head office of the reserve. You can walk around in about 1 hour, but you have to stop at the two observatories. Go early in the morning to the North Observatory, otherwise you will quickly be backlit. In the other, you will always have the sun in your back.

Français: Commune d'Ifendic. Route de St Péran sur la D35. Suivre les pancartes "Espace naturel départemental". Parking devant l'ancienne ferme, siège de la réserve.On peut faire le tour à pied en environ 1 heure, mais il faut s'arrêter aux deux observatoires. Allez tôt le matin à l'observatoire Nord, sinon vous serez vite à contrejour. Dans l'autre, vous aurez toujours le soleil dans le dos.
