13,000 hectare floodplain on north bank of the river Adour east of Saubusse. Useful birding place when flooded. 880 ha protected for hunting and 93ha conserved.
The area of Les Barthes de L'Adour attracts swans, geese and dabbling ducks when flooded. When the floods retreat you can see waders, such as Dunlin, Common Sandpiper, egrets and Yellow-legged Gull. Many birds breed in the area including White Stork and Zitting Cisticola. Corn Crake visit on passage and White-tailed Eagle is a winter visitor.
Difficult to access by car when flooded, and telescope essential. Parking places as shown on the map. Nearest train stations is at Saubusse. The walking/cycling routes suggested are between 3 km and 6 km.
Barthes means 'wet meadow' in the Gascon language.
