Protected area made up of several ponds surrounded by coniferous forests. The area holds nesting colonies of herons and Great Cormorant.

Description

Loudon is particularly interesting for its heronry where Grey Heron, Cattle Egret and Great Cormorant nest. There are other nesting birds such as Little Grebe, Great Crested Grebe, Black-headed Gull, Eurasian Hobby, Eurasian Coot, Mute Swan and many others. In winter, you can see Common Pochard, Tufted Duck, Northern Shoveler and other duck species, as well as passerines such as the Eurasian Siskin. The Green Sandpiper, Common Snipe and Common Kingfisher are present all year round. The forest is home to Eurasian Nightjar and Black Woodpecker.

Français: Ce site classé ZNIEFF est composé de plusieurs étangs entourés de forêts de connifères (Landes). Ce site est particulierement interressant pour sa héronnière où y niche le Héron cendré, le Héron garde boeuf et le Grand cormoran. On y trouve d'autres oiseaux nicheurs comme le grèbe castagneux, huppé, Mouette rieuse, Faucon hobereau, Foulque macroule, Cygne tuberculé et bien d'autre.

L'hiver on y observe le Fuligule millouin, morillon, Sarcelle d'hiver, Canard souchet entre autres Anatidés ainsi que des passeraux tel que le Tarin des aulnes. Le Chevalier culblanc, la Bécassine des marais, le Martin pêcheur d'Europe, la Gallinule poule d'eau y sont également present toute l'année. La forêt acceuille l'Engoulevent d'Europe et le Pic noir.

Access

Accessible by car. Park at the edge of the road which runs alongside the ponds. You can overlook the ponds from the road and there is a possibility of making loops on foot or by bike in the forest all around the site.
