Hautes-Alpes  >  France

The forest above the village of Orpierre is a wonderful area for walks and bird watching. Beautiful views, quiet forest and birds everywhere in spring.

Description

The woodland above Orpierre is a mixed forest with oak and coniferous trees. The trees are more mature on the upper slopes. The structure of the forest is very open, making bird watching relatively easy. The views of the rock walls behind Orpierre during the walk are beautiful. Among the birds you can see here are Eurasian Wryneck, Great Spotted Woodpecker, Eurasian Green Woodpecker, Crested Tit and Short-toed Snake Eagle.

For birding spring is definitely the best period here. In summer you don't see that many birds, sometimes it feels that the birds have totally disappeared. But the hike is still nice, because of the beautiful landscapes. The end of the trail runs along the stream in the valley. There you can often see Grey Wagtail.

Access

You can park at the supermarket in Orpierre (see the P on the map). The route through the forest is a circular trail of 5 km signposted with yellow markers. The walk bridges a height difference of about 300 meters. There are some steep parts, but the trail is in a good condition.

Start of from the parking. You cross the bridge and follow the road along camping Princess d'Orange and follow the yellow markers. The yellow markers are not always very visible, so you can also follow the route on the map below on your phone. Put on good walking shoes because the trail is rocky.
