Description

The area is of great importance for breeding birds of semi-natural grasslands and wetlands. Around 80 species of breeding birds are recorded annually, including Eurasian Curlew, Northern Lapwing, White Stork , Little Grebe, Water Rail, Common Quail, Garganey, Common Teal, Northern Shoveler, Gadwall, Eurasian Hobby, Common Cuckoo, Bluethroat, European Stonechat, Reed Warbler (rarely Sedge Warbler and Great Reed Warbler) and Red-backed Shrike. Large flocks of Greater White-fronted Goose use the area during winter, and also a small group of Lesser White-fronted Goose from a rewilding project in Sweden has established a "tradition" to visit the area for wintering, starting in 2017. In late winter, the area serves as roosting place for hundreds of Common Crane and during spring migration, a great variety of ducks and waders can be encountered. Occasionally, rarities show up (e.g. Purple Heron, Ferruginous Duck, Little Crake).
