The birds from the surrounding tidal mud flats gather here at high tide on the edge of the salt marsh and on a small sandbank.
Bensersiel is an area where at high tide, the birds crowd in a small area and particularly close to the path. They are well accustomed to passers-by, so the birds rarely show flight behavior. Large flocks of gulls are usually found here (especially Common Gull and Black-headed Gull) as well as Eurasian Oystercatcher. Occasionally there are also larger groups of Grey Plover, Bar-tailed Godwit or Dunlin. Geese also rest here occasionally. In addition to Greylag Goose, Brent Goose also stay here in the winter months. The spot concentrates on practically one point, so that no long hike is necessary or possible and is particularly worthwhile in combination with other observation points, e.g. at Neßmersiel, Neuharlingersiel or similar.
Parking is a bit difficult. There are numerous paid parking spaces, where you sometimes have to take a day ticket. At the driveway there is a possibility to park for free. From here you only have to climb over the dike and walk a little to the east. Click on the P in the map for directions.
