Wet meadow area between Landau and Germersheim that attracts hundreds of White Stork and many other birds.
The Queichwiesen covers an area of almost 400 hectares. The Queichbrücke near Ottersheim is an ideal place for observation with a spotting scope or binoculars. Several hundred White Stork, swarms of Common Starling and Barn Swallow as well as various types of waders can often be observed when the meadows are irrigated in April and May and in July and August. Rare guests such as Black Stork or Black-winged Stilt also appear on such days. The days when the meadows are irrigated can be requested at Queichwiesen.de (see the clickable link below). Wear waterproof shoes on these watering days! Among the other birds you can expect in the area are Meadow Pipit, Grey Heron, European Stonechat, Northern Lapwing, Red-backed Shrike and Black Kite.
The area is very easy to explore on foot or by bike. There is a parking lot at the end of the 'Waldstraße' opposite the oldtimer barn in 76879 Ottersheim. Click on the P in the map to get directions. The circular route indicated on the map is about 10 km long.
