Description

Ahrenshoop is not only interesting as an historic artists' village, but also as a particularly beautiful area due to the steep seaside cliffs that run south of the village for about 2 km. It lies just south of the Vorpommersche Boddenlandschaft National Park. At the southern end of the cliffs is the village of Wustrow which has a long pier, this is also a great spot for seabird-watching (starred on the map).

The area is especially interesting in spring and summer when huge numbers of Ластівка берегова nest on the cliffs, forming Germany's largest colony. Furthermore, seawatching is excellent from several vantage points.

Depending on the season, many different typical seabirds can be observed here, such as: Гагара червоношия, Гагара чорношия, Турпан, Синьга, Пухівка зеленошия, and Крячок рябодзьобий. Late autumn and winter is especially good for various migrating seabirds and wintering waterfowl. With luck, many rarities can be spotted here. Behind the cliffs lies picturesque farmland and villages.

Access

Ahrenshoop is located on the Fischland-Darß-Zingst peninsula along the Baltic Sea. There are parking spaces in the village of Ahrenshoop, but some are very expensive. There is also a parking in the village of Niehagen to the east. (Click on a P on the map for directions).

Theoretically it is also possible to park respectfully on suitable streets of the villages close to the cliff areas. These are all within about a 2.5 km radius/30min walk of the middle part of the cliffs.

The cliffs can be accessed on foot and by bicycle. Please be very careful, as erosion is always a possibility here, and this is an important natural habitat that must not be disturbed.

Public Transport: The 210 Bus from Ribnitz to Barth runs through Niehagen and Ahrenshoop. (bustoops marked with 1 and 2 on the map). This is approximately a 50 minute journey. See the link below for timetable.

There is also actually a ferry that runs during weeekdays from Ribnitz-Damgarten in the south of the Saaler Bodden (lagoon) to Ahrenshoop (Number 3 on the map). This journey takes 1hr 15min.

Ribnitz has a regional train station with several lines running through it.
