Description
Wöhrder Wiese is a large green space in central Nuremberg, located along the Pegnitz River and adjacent to the Wöhrder See. While primarily used for recreation, the area provides a mix of open grassland, scattered trees, and riparian vegetation that supports a variety of bird species. Its location at the edge of the city center makes it a convenient spot for casual birdwatching.
Typical sightings include common birds like Obični kos, various tits, Golub grivnaš, and Vrana. In spring and summer, species such as Obični zviždak, Crnoglava grmuša, and Crna čiopa can be observed. The nearby water bodies attract Gluvara, Siva čaplja, and occasionally Veliki vranac or gulls. During migration periods, the area can host increased bird activity, especially along the river corridor.
Though not a dedicated bird reserve, Wöhrder Wiese offers opportunities to observe urban-adapted birds and seasonal visitors in a central, accessible setting.
While rare birds are not common at Wöhrder Wiese, occasional surprises occur, especially during migration. These may include Crnovrata muharica, Crna crvenrepka, or Siva muharica in the trees and shrubs. The area’s mix of habitats and central location make it a useful stopover for birds navigating the urban landscape.

Wöhrder Wiese is one of Nuremberg’s most popular urban green spaces, offering recreation, relaxation, and nature in the heart of the city. It is part of a larger ecological corridor along the Pegnitz River, which includes the Wöhrder See (Birdingplaces page for Wöhrder See see link below) and surrounding parks. The area is used for picnics, sports, and events, but also serves as an important green buffer and habitat for urban wildlife.
Efforts have been made in recent years to improve the ecological value of the area, including riverbank restoration and the creation of more natural vegetation zones. This contributes to its growing role as a space where people and nature can coexist - even in a densely populated urban environment.
