Wetland near the village of Georgioupoulis where you can see water birds and waders. It also has a great Barn Swallow roost.
Lake Almyros is one of the most important wetlands of western Crete. In the lake you can find many aquatic birds. The lake is not only worth a visit for waterfowl. In Georgioupoulis I found the largest Barn Swallow roost I have seen so far! Among the other birds you can encounter are Common Greenshank, Wood Sandpiper, Common Snipe, Common Sandpiper, Green Sandpiper, Common Kingfisher, Alpine Swift, Little Egret, Yellow-legged Gull, European Goldfinch, Italian Sparrow and Cetti's Warbler.
You can reach the lake from the town when following the road "Palea EO Chanion Rethimnou". The Barn Swallow roost is at the opposite position of the town.
