At the south west edge of the Axios delta the Nea Agathoupoli observation tower is located, with a great variety of marsh birds.
Nea Agathoupoli is a wonderful site, with great numbers of a lot of interesting birds. One of those places where you feel that there is to much to see to handle.
From the observation tower you have a good view of the delta and the lagoons with sometimes big amounts of Little Bittern, Great Bittern, Squacco Heron, Black-crowned Night Heron, Purple Heron, Glossy Ibis and a lot of ducks and Ferruginous Duck. In the surrounding area Golden Oriole, Woodchat Shrike and Gull-billed Tern can be seen.
By bus: step of at the center of Nea Agathoupoli and walk NE from there. By car: drive E75 and take of E towards Nea Agathoupoli.
The observation tower is only open some days and parts of the day, Wednesday – Friday: 10:00- 14:00 + 2 Saturdays/month. But standing on the hill behind the tower works fine.
