Description

The Polichnitos saltpans are located on the southern side of the Gulf of Kalloni, and are way smaller compared to the Kalloni saltpans. Therefore, the area is great to get a good overview of the present birds, like waders, waterfowl, gulls and so much more. Starting from the spot where you can park your car for a circular route around the pans, you can scan the fields surrouding the car park for species, like pipits, wagtails, larks and Eurasian Hoopoe. Scattered bushes and trees around the house are good for migrants, like chats, shrikes and flycatchers.

The beach is a nice spot for waders, like breeding Kentish Plover, but also many other species, like Sanderling, Wood Sandpiper and Little Ringed Plover. A track that leads you towards the southern part of the saltpans adjacent to the sea also provides great views over the bay.

The saltpans themselves are fantastic for a large variety of migrating waders, waterfowl, storks, Eurasian Spoonbill, egrets, herons and Greater Flamingo. The small dams between each pan can be covered in foraging waders, like Temminck's Stint, Little Stint, Wood Sandpiper, Dunlin, Curlew Sandpiper, Common Greenshank, Ruff and so much more! It is advised to stop and scan often while walking the track along the southern side of the pans. Large flocks of waterfowl can be present too, like Ruddy Shelduck and Garganey, and in winter Northern Pintail and Common Teal too. Like the other saltpans, large flocks of Greater Flamingo are often present.

The surrounding fields are great for migrating raptors, like Western Marsh Harrier and Montagu's Harrier. Above the wooded hill on the southern side of the pans, flocks of falcons can be seen too, like Red-footed Falcon during migration.
