Description

Aukštaitija National Park has many nice areas for birding. More than 200 different bird species have been spotted in the park. The flooded Žemaitiškės meadows on the east coast of Lake Cretuon is one of these areas. The wet meadows are visited by a large number of protected bird species, such as Black-necked Grebe, Black Tern, Gadwall, Common Quail, Spotted Crake, Corn Crake, Great Snipe, Black-tailed Godwit and others. It is a newly emerging natural area, a habitat for birds, which has arisen in the place of the once-defyed meadows. Over time, man-made drying systems began to collapse, resulting in the formation of swampy grassland areas at the site of the former Wyoh stream. It is most convenient to view this area from the observation platform specially located near the village of Reškutėnai. Birds are best observed in April - September.
