Desert around Merzouga

Errachidia  >  Morocco

The region around Merzouga is arguably one of the best birdwatching spots on the WP. Here you can find almost all desert types of the WP in a very small area.

Description

In the Merzouga region you can find desert specialties such as Egyptian Nightjar, African Desert Warbler, Desert Sparrow, Blue-cheeked Bee-eater, Crowned Sandgrouse and Pharaoh Eagle-Owl. The little gerbil (Jaculus jaculus) can be found on a nocturnal excursion.

Access

Coming from the north you drive on the asphalt road N13 Erfoud via Rissani to Merzouga. Since some species are very difficult to find themselves and you have to drive partly through the sandy desert, I recommend the Desert Day Trip from Gayuinbirding (see the link below). Within a day they can reliably show all the birds in the region.
