Description

The Brunssummerheide is a varied nature reserve of 600 hectare. It has remnants of the former coniferous forests, deciduous forest, open sandy plains and the characteristic fens. The heathland is also varied with drier parts and wetter parts. Some places are so wet that you can see reed birds and waders such as Reed Warbler, Reed Bunting, Common Sandpiper, Green Sandpiper and Water Rail . The heather is interspersed with grasses, shrubs and trees. The transition between heath and forest is the habitat for the Eurasian Nightjar. In the forests you will find five different woodpecker species and many other forest birds. The semi-open areas are home to Wood Warbler, Common Redstart, Tree Pipit, Wood Lark, Common Crossbill and Yellowhammer. You can also see birds of prey such as Eurasian Goshawk, Sparrowhawk, Eurasian Hobby, Eurasian Kestrel, European Honey-buzzard and Common Buzzard. See also the extensive bird list below.
