The former agricultural area between the villages of Heerde and Wapenveld is now in use as river overflow area. This wet area attracts many birds.
A river overflow area has been constructed between Heerde and Wapenveld. This overflow area gives the river IJssel more space. With high water, the inlet opens and the water flows in. The overflow area hetween Wapenveld and Heerde is nice for birding. It's an open meadow area with dikes and ditches. Among the birds you can see here are European Stonechat, Eurasian Curlew, Northern Shoveler, Garganey, Common Snipe, Western Yellow Wagtail, Hen Harrier (winter) and Short-eared Owl (spring).
You can explore the area by car, bicycle or on foot. The roads Schraatgravenweg/Breeweg in the village of Wapenveld are located in the centre of the area. These two roads are marked on the map.
