Description

It Hegewiersterfjild is a very attractive area for meadow birds. Black-tailed Godwit, Northern Lapwing, Eurasian Oystercatcher and Common Redshank breed here annually in fairly high densities. Avocet and Western Yellow Wagtail also have their domain there. In 2002 even Black-winged Stilt was breeding here. In winter this area serves as a staging and foraging area for waders. Various species have been observed, such as Common Sandpiper, Ruddy Turnstone, Dunlin, Red Knot, Purple Sandpiper, Common Greenshank, Spotted Redshank, Green Sandpiper and Bar-tailed Godwit. During high tide in the Wadden Sea, the area functions as a high-tide refuge for many species of wading birds.
