Description
It's small but beautiful area. Combined with a visit to the fort (Fort Pannerden) in the middle of the reserve or the nearby castle (Kasteel Doornenburg), it's well worth the visit.
The reserve has thickets of nettle and thistles with very high densities of Marsh Warbler, Greater Whitethroat, Grasshopper Warbler and Reed Bunting. In the parts with a bit more bushes Meadow Pipit, European Goldfinch and Lesser Whitethroat are common. Along the small lake and side channel there are some breeding waterbirds like Great Crested Grebe, Tufted Duck, Gadwall and in most years Common Kingfisher and Garganey.
The fort in the middle of the reserve is a museum nowadays. Visitors have free access to the rooftop terrace with a great view. Eurasian Kestrel and Jackdaw breeding in the fort can be seen from the roof. At night, Barn Owl can be seen around the fort.
When looking east from the fort you can see a colony of Great Cormorant and Grey Heron. This site can be reached with the car ferry across the channel.
In summer a small ferry crosses the river Waal to nature reserve Millingerwaard.

Access
The Klompenwaard can be reached from Doornenburg. There is a parking place outside the village. In summer there are even TukTuks that can take you to the fort.
Inside the reserve the only option is a visit on foot.
