A reserve along the river Waal and a new side channel of this river. The side channel was made for high water safety, but the result is also a bird rich area.
The Spiegelwaal is a new side channel of the river Waal. It's located in the middle of the city of Nijmegen and connects riverine nature west and east of the city. The area is easy accesible with public transport, on foot, or best by bike.
On the island between the river and its side channel it's good birding. Grey Partridge, Little Ringed Plover, Eurasian Oystercatcher, European Stonechat, Grasshopper Warbler and European Goldfinch breed here. Peregrine Falconand Eurasian Kestrel can be seen hunting. And also look at the bridges and towers for Peregrine Falcon! Along the side channel (and on the small island in it) waders can be seen during migration and gulls roost here, like Caspian Gull, Mediterranean Gull, Yellow-legged Gull, Common Gull, Black-headed Gull, Great Black-backed Gull and Lesser Black-backed Gull.
On the backside of the small fort on the other side of the Dyke there's a small colony of Grey Heron and Common Nightingale can be heard at night. Little Owl and Barn Owl breed in the this area too.
Under one of the bridges there is big colony of House Martin.
The area is very easy accesible. From Nijmegen city you just cross one of the bridges, on foot or with your bike.
