Description

In the Terschellinger polder, farming takes place in a number of places in a way that focuses on meadow birds. With success, it is an area with many meadow birds. Black-tailed Godwit, Northern Lapwing, Common Redshank, Eurasian Oystercatcher and Northern Shoveler are still doing well here, as well as Eurasian Skylark and Meadow Pipit, but also Common Tern, Arctic Tern and Avocet breed here and are clearly visible. Especially during the autumn migration, large groups of thrushes sometimes settle down, such as Redwing, Fieldfare and Song Thrush. You also have the greatest chance of rarer species. In winter, many geese forage in the area, especially Brent Goose. Sometimes there is also a Red-breasted Goose. You can also find large groups of Northern Lapwing and European Golden Plover.

The endless mudflats of the Wadden Sea begin on the other side of the dike. Along the dike there are a number of higher areas where birds can forage for a long time even with rising water. Numerous waders can be found here, but also ducks and geese such as Common Shelduck, Common Eider and Brent Goose. The stone dike foot is a good place for Rock Pipit. At low tide, the birds can sit far away on the tidal flats that are drying up, while at high tide the water can reach the dike. Ideally, you check the mudflats when the water rises, the birds will come closer and closer, especially if you sit somewhere quiet. Click on the link below to see the tides table.
