The "Tichelgaten" is a fairly small natural area consisting of small forested areas, pastures and small ponds. A good stop for relaxed birding!
The "Tichelgaten" is a fairly small natural area near the village of Buren and consists of several small ponds, reedbeds, pastures and small forested areas. Once, this area has been excavated for clay and has been turned into a small natural area since. The area is a good spot for many species of common songbird, woodpecker and small numbers of waterbirds. Frequently sighted species are Eurasian Green Woodpecker, Blackcap and Spotted Flycatcher. The small ponds and reedbeds are a great spot for Reed Warbler, Little Grebe and Common Kingfisher. The small forested area in the west provides good habitat for woodpeckers, like Great Spotted Woodpecker and sometimes Lesser Spotted Woodpecker. Scarcer species that can be found here are Golden Oriole, Cetti's Warbler, Hawfinch and Common Nightingale.
On the northern side of the road, the biggest pond is located and provides a great spot for many species of waterbird. In winter, fairly large numbers of Tufted Duck and Gadwall can be found here. Sometimes, scarcer species like Goosander and Common Pochard might show up.
The area is easy accessible due to several trails going through the area. A parking lot near the main road is available.
