Description

The Vreugderijkerwaard is a 97-hectare wetland with up to five-meter-high river dunes and a secondary channel flowing along the river IJssel. The wetland has reedbeds and mudflats. A large part of the year the area is a resting place for migratory birds, so you can see Northern Lapwing, Ruff and Black-tailed Godwit. In the winter, the area is often populated by thousands of Greater White-fronted Goose. Breeding birds in this nature reserve include the Corn Crake, Common Tern and Avocet. The Western Marsh Harrier finds his hunting ground in the reed land. Other birds you can see here are: Eurasian Spoonbill, Eurasian Wigeon, European Golden Plover, Bewick's Swan, Barnacle Goose, Ruddy Shelduck, Common Shelduck, Northern Pintail, Common Teal, Common Pochard, Common Goldeneye, Greater Scaup, Goosander, Smew, Little Grebe, Eurasian Oystercatcher, Black-necked Grebe, Common Ringed Plover, Little Ringed Plover, Tundra Bean Goose, Canada Goose.
