Description

"Zandput Culemborg" is an old sand extraction area, consisting of a small lake and is surrounded by a poplar and willow forest. Adjacent to the forest, large pastures draw the landscape. The lake itself isn't a hotspot for waterbirds. Species like Great Crested Grebe and Tufted Duck can be seen. The shoreline and its overhanging branches are a great spot for Common Kingfisher. The area provides also an important habitat for the Western Clubtail (dragonfly).

The forest is a great spot for observing Golden Oriole in Spring; a scarce species in the area. Several individuals tend to hang around during the breeding season. Other songbird species that can be heard and seen regularly are Spotted Flycatcher, Willow Tit, Eurasian Nuthatch and Garden Warbler. Scarcer species that can be seen here are Lesser Spotted Woodpecker and Cetti's Warbler. The larger bushes adjacent to the forest and pastures are great for Icterine Warbler and Marsh Warbler.

The pastures provide a good foraging area for White Stork. They can also be seen resting on the street lights above the highway from here. Another good species in these pastures is Grey Partridge.
