Home to a colony of re-introduced Northern Bald Ibis

Added* by John Cantelo
Most recent update 12 April 2023

Description

This site is the main location for the reintroduced Northern Bald Ibis. Although often present early mornings and evenings throughout the year, the birds are best looked for in spring. They next on a rock face besides a busy road but a crash barrier keeps birders safe and a small shelter protects against sun and rain. There are excellent opportunities to photograph the species both by barrier, in flight and often in the large sandy car park nearby. A Cattle Egret colony in the nearby reeds has recently been abandoned but may yet return. The Venta Pinto across the main road is a great place to stop for a coffee and snack to plan the rest of your day.
