Description

Laguna Sentiz is one of the largest and most important steppe lagoons in the province of León. It is close to the town of Valdepolo, just over half an hour from the capital of León. It is a permanent water lagoon surrounded by marsh vegetation. In it you can find aquatic species, open water and linked to the reed like herons (Grey Heron, Purple Heron, Little Bittern), ducks such as Mallard, Northern Shoveler or Common Teal and passerines such as Reed Bunting, Sedge Warbler and Reed Warbler.

The environment that surrounds it is made up of farmland and some spots of holm oak and Pyrenean oak. This increases the diversity of species. Some of them are European Turtle Dove, Common Quail, Cirl Bunting, Woodchat Shrike, Ortolan Bunting, etc. The raptor community is well represented with species such as Western Marsh Harrier, Montagu's Harrier, Short-eared Owl and Hen Harrier among others. Here we can see species as interesting as they are scarce at the provincial level. Highlighting Black-winged Kite, Eurasian Spoonbill or Bluethroat. Even Black Stork, Glossy Ibis or Garganey have been cited.
