Description

To the east of Palencia city lies the village of Villaviudas, nestled in the heart of the natural region of Cerrato Palentino. The proposed itinerary showcases the essential landscape feature of this region: the limestone plateaus.

This birdwatching route begins and ends among cereal fields. This environment is ideal for observing birds associated with cereal pseudo-steppes, with their cryptic plumage. Notable examples include the Stone-curlew, Calandra Lark, and Crested Lark.

As you ascend to the plateau known as La Torrecilla, the landscape changes dramatically. Thyme scrubland and oak-holm oak groves appear, where you can spot Dartford Warbler and Spectacled Warbler among the small shrubs. The Ortolan Bunting, Wood Lark, Thekla's Lark, and Black-eared Wheatear are also typical birds of these open environments. Soaring above them all are raptors such as the Short-toed Snake Eagle and Booted Eagle. Other birds you can encounter during this walk are Iberian Magpie and Montagu's Harrier.
