Description

The Segrià and Utxesa drylands is a group of reservoirs and their respective tail waters. It was built over 100 years ago to generate hydroelectric power, and has since become naturalized. The surrounding environment is formed by a mosaic of crops, basically fruit trees but also cereals and others. This means that there is a great diversity of landscapes and that in a small area we can find highly diversified habitats. Utxesa is therefore one of the enclaves of the Catalan interior that is of most ornithological interest.

It is an important area for birds linked to the reed beds and birds like Bearded Tit, Reed Bunting, Moustached Warbler, Great Reed Warbler, Zitting Cisticola and Cetti's Warbler. But also heron species like Purple Heron, Black-crowned Night Heron and Little Bittern feel at home here. It is also a stop in the migratory and wintering stages of numerous species of ducks and other waterbirds. The area also houses the larger part of the population of Western Marsh Harrier in Catalonia. But many more birds can be seen, see the extended birdlist below.
