Description
(*1). (press STARS on map) Upper estuary area, locally called 'Cuckoo Corner'. In Winter Vodomar Barski petlovan, Vivak and Zlatni vivak can be expected. Surrounding fields can have Velika strnadica, whilst both Seoska lasta and Gradska lasta are present often being chased by Lastavičar late in the season.
(*2). Adur Estuary, surrounded on all sides by footpaths, use Adur Recreation Ground Car Park (free). During Autumn/Winter/Spring Ostrigar, Crvenonogi sprudnik, Žalar blatarić, Šljuka kamenjarka, Crnotrba sprutka, the occasional Sabljarka, Srebrni vivak, Krivokljuni sprudnik, Laponska muljača, Muljača, Mala carska šljuka (Spring) and Velika carska šljuka.
(*3). RSPB Adur Estuary, is a NO access reserve, view from surrounding roads and footpaths. High Spring Tides move birds off this reserve. Check through Gull flocks carefully, Crnoglavi galeb are often to be found amongst Obični galeb here, both Morski galeb and Sinji galeb have been seen.
(*4). Shoreham Fort, use the car park (free) and explore the river mouth and out to sea. Morska sprutka are often mixed in with the Šljuka kamenjarka. Their favourite spot is on the wooden pier. Obična bluna can be seen, sometimes at long distance though.
(*5). Southwick Ship Canal. Birds often shelter here during stormy weather. View from lock gates at Western End or A259 road on Northern side, BE AWARE the beach near the car park (free) is A DESIGNATED NATURISTS BEACH.
(*6). The Beaches, West of Shoreham Fort is good for birds, unfortunately often disturbed by dog walkers.
(*7). Widewater Lagoon. The car park (fee payable) here is right next to the brackish lagoon. Grivasta guska, Krdža and occasionally Veliki ronac can be found in Winter. The margins of the Lagoon can have Ostrigar, Žalar blatarić and Crvenonogi sprudnik, occasionally Velika sprutka, Mala sprutka and Žalar slepić turn up here.
