Description
The River Blyth estuary has intertidal mudflats and the river itself attracts waders and wildfowl, especially during migration. Among the birds you can encounter are Călifar alb, Eider, Scoicar, Nagâț, Prundăraș gulerat mare, Fugaci mare, Fugaci de țărm, Fugaci roșcat, Fugaci mic, Culic mare, Culic mic, Fluierar de munte and Sitar de mal nordic. In recent years, there has been a noticeable spring pre-breeding gathering of Ciocîntors in March and April. Recent rarities include a Fugaci cu gât roșu from 5-7 June 2021. At the east end of the site, the old Bates Colliery works have been reclaimed, and offer some small freshwater pools and shrub habitat that are attracting a range of warblers and finches.

Access
On street parking on side streets to the north of A193, around Cowpen; most space on Cowley Road (at the P on the map), some limited options for roadside parking further west along Coniston Road and Ennerdale Road, but take care not to block factory entrances, or limit viewing on curved sections. Some roadside parking also on Chain Ferry Road, the next road to the east. Bus services 1, 2 and X8 pass nearby.
