Also called the Ritch Grissom Memorial Wetlands, the Viera Wetlands is one of the older wetlands parks in Florida. It's a series of water reclamation ponds surrounded by high banks and trails allowing walking and bicycling. Because there is always water in the ponds, there are always birds. Crested Caracara nest at this site. Other birds you can observe include Sandhill Crane, Osprey, Bald Eagle, Wood Stork, Least Bittern, King Rail, Glossy Ibis, Roseate Spoonbill, Black-necked Stilt and Purple Gallinule. Scarce migrants such as American Golden Plover, Upland Sandpiper and Buff-breasted Sandpiper have been recorded.

Viera Wetlands is located North of Melbourne or south of Cocoa, exit Interstate 95 at Exit 191, Wickham Road. Drive west 0.4 mile and go around the traffic circle. Continue straight to stay on N Wickham Rd. The turnoff into the park is after 2.2 miles, on the left. There is a large parking area below the levee, which provides convenient access to the wetlands (3658 Charlie Corbeil Way, Viera, FL 32940). Press P on the map for directions. Opening times 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM.
The area is open to hikers and bicycles. The trails are entirely out in the open, with no shade except at an observation tower. Alligator sightings are common. Do not approach the water’s edge.
