Since the construction of the Großglockner Hochalpenstraße (High Alpine Road) it became very easy to explore this mountain world with its fauna and flora in the middle of the Hohe Tauern National Park. On the Großglockner Hochalpenstraße you pass a great bird viewing point (see the map). During different times of the day we have seen at least 20 birds of prey here.
Most notable is the Golden Eagle. The approximately 40 breeding pairs of the High Tauern National Park are one of the biggest populations in Europe. The 162 currently known nesting sites are located at altitudes between 1,100 and 2,100 m. Among the other birds you can see here are Griffon Vulture, Bearded Vulture (Lammergeier), Sparrowhawk, Eurasian Kestrel, Common Raven and Yellow-billed Chough.
The Grossglockner High Alpine Road is open from early May to early November. To May 31st, 6:00 am to 7:30 pm, 1st June to 31st August, 5:30 am to 8:30 pm from 1st Sept. 6 am - 7:30 pm
A day ticket for a car is 37 euro. Last entrance 45 minutes before the night lock.
You can reach the viewpoint easy by car and can park your car directly by the place. The viewpoint is marked with a P on the map.
