Description

The Assebroekse Meersen is a nature reserve near the city of Bruges. The 420 ha area consists of low-lying wet meadows and hayfields, surrounded by rows of pollard willows and poplars. Due to the low location and the confluence of a number of streams, the area is a wet and swampy hay meadow area. Wellies are recommended during wet periods. A network of streams, ditches and canals ensures water management in the area and contributes to the charm of this landscape. Linked to the winter flooding of several streams, the Assebroekse Meersen provide a resting place and foraging site for waders and herons such as Eurasian Curlew, Whimbrel, Black-tailed Godwit, Common Greenshank, Green Sandpiper, Northern Lapwing and Little Egret. The pollard willows offer plenty of breeding opportunities for Little Owl and Common Redstart.
