Description

The Bay of Heist is a 50 hectare nature reserve that consists on the one hand of embryonic dunes and on the other hand of a slufter with mud flats and salt marshes. These nutrient-rich silt soils are very attractive to all kinds of waders and ducks. The low beach offers breeding grounds for ground-nesting beach birds such as Kentish Plover and Common Ringed Plover. The bay is a place where countless species of birds come to rest and are loved by bird watchers. Birds you can see here include Common Gull, Brent Goose, Eurasian Oystercatcher, Ruff, Barnacle Goose, Meadow Pipit, Ruddy Turnstone, Black-headed Gull, Lesser Black-backed Gull and Great Black-backed Gull.
