Description

The Ballewijer nature reserve is enclosed in the urban areas of Zonhoven and Molenheide. The area consists of two ponds. The ponds with their reed beds are of great value for waterfowl, amphibians and dragonflies. The edge of the marsh and ponds is a biotope that mainly attracts Bluethroat and Water Rail. The marsh contains both Eurasian Woodcock and Common Snipe. The small reed beds are home to breeding birds like Reed Warbler and Reed Bunting. Other birds that you can see are Osprey, Little Bittern, Great Crested Grebe, Little Grebe, Garganey, Gadwall, Tufted Duck, Common Pochard and Northern Shoveler and also waders during bird migration.
