Description

De Fonteintjes is an area with dune lakes, interspersed with dune thickets and moist dune valleys. The dune lakes contain fresh water barely 100 meters from the sea. That attracts many birds. The area is especially worthwhile in spring and during bird migration. In the spring you can hear all kinds of reed birds. In the reedlands, Cetti's Warbler, Sedge Warbler, Reed Warbler and Marsh Warbler sing. Now and then you also hear the call of the Water Rail. Other birds you can see are Eurasian Spoonbill, Western Marsh Harrier, Mediterranean Gull Sandwich Tern, Purple Heron and Whimbrel. In late summer, rare birds sometimes settle in the area to rest during their migration. In winter the Great Bittern is a regular visitor.
