The raptor lookout and visual migration watchpoint 'De Geitenberg' is a great place to visit in the autumn between half august and half november.
This unique place offers a panoramic view of the landscape between the rivers Schelde en Leie. In autumn there are always raptors around and it's a very good spot to watch migrating birds, especially early in the morning. Between half august and half september, there are usually Western Marsh Harrier , European Honey-buzzard , Peregrine Falcon , Eurasian Kestrel and Common Buzzard around. Good chance to see Hen Harrier and Red Kite as well. It has become a famous spot to see Dotterel , both in autumn and spring. Northern Wheatear ,Whinchat and Tawny Pipit are also regular in migration periods. In autumnmornings, there are usually birdwatchers on the platform. From this platform, already 193 species have been seen in the last 15 years, not bad for an inland spot. There is always the possibility something unexpected turns up here.
Please park on the spot indicated on the map, as driving in the area is not allowed without a permit. It is only a short walk from the parking to the lookout.
The place is best visited when wind the comes from eastern directions. Best time of the day is early mornings, for migrating songbirds, geese, waders. Raptors are usually seen as from 10 a.m. Dotterel is usually seen in the end of august through september, most are flyovers, but staging birds are regular. Good knowledge of birdcalls is recommended here. It is a quiet place in a very busy area. Species like Rough-legged Buzzard , Osprey , Montagu's Harrier , Pallid Harrier , White Stork , Short-eared Owl , Red-throated Pipit , Snow Bunting, Lapland Bunting ... have turned up on regular basis.
The 'lookouttower' is in this case as special installed birdwatching platform in concrete blocks which makes it comfortable to spend several hours on this spot. Please do not obstruct agricultural vehicles when parking your car.
