64 hectare of restored freshwater tidal area on the River Durme.

Most recent update 4 April 2023

Description

The Groot Broek tidal nature reserve was poldered, but has been depoldered again in the context of flood risk management and given back to the river Durme. For example, the river has more space in times of high water. It will once again be a freshwater tidal area with mud flats and salt marshes. That attracts a lot of birds. Birds that you can see here are Common Shelduck, Northern Lapwing, Little Grebe, Common Snipe, Common Redshank, Common Greenshank, Great Cormorant, Eurasian Spoonbill, Bluethroat, European Stonechat and Reed Bunting. You can combine a visit with the adjacent area of Klein Broek where the same development has taken place and this area is also described on Birdingplaces.
