Nature reserve on the edge of the Flemish Ardennes along the river Scheldt. The 19 hectare area consists of pools, spontaneous vegetation, trees and shrubs.

Description

Grootmeers is a 19 hectare nature reserve located along the river Scheldt. The spontaneous development of trees consisting of Willow, Birch with scattered Hawthorn and clearings attracts warblers such as Greater Whitethroat, Common Chiffchaff, Common Chaffinch, Firecrest and Goldcrest. The pool as a wet zone with a limited stream has already produced a Purple Heron several times. It is especially challenging to roam freely and to search for birds in the shrubs, small trees and taller trees. regularly comes to forage in the area. Other birds that can be seen here are Bluethroat, Lesser Whitethroat, Tree Pipit, Sparrowhawk, Green Sandpiper, European Goldfinch and Northern Wheatear.

Nederlands: Grootmeers is een natuurgebied van 19 hectare gelegen langs de Schelde. De spontane ontwikkeling van bomen bestaande uit Wilg, Berk met verspreid Meidoorn en open plekken zorgt ervoor dat hoofdzakelijks zangers zoals Greater Whitethroat, Common Chiffchaff, Common Chaffinch, Firecrest en Goldcrest ervan genieten. De poel als natte zone met een beperkte beek heeft al meermaals een Purple Heron opgeleverd. Vooral het vrij rondlopen en het afspeuren van struiken, kleine bomen en hogere bomen blijft een uitdaging. Regelmatig komt Common Buzzard foerageren in het gebied. Andere vogels die hier gezien worden zijn Bluethroat, Lesser Whitethroat, Tree Pipit, Sparrowhawk, Green Sandpiper, European Goldfinch en Northern Wheatear.

Access

The site is freely accessible to hikers from sunrise to sunset. In wet periods, boots are often necessary. In winter, when the water level is high, the path through the Grootmeers is often difficult to access (even with boots). Parking is possible along the access to the towpath near the Nederzwalmsesteentweg.

Nederlands: Het terrein is vrij toegankelijk voor wandelaars vanaf zonsopgang tot zonsondergang. In natte periodes zijn vaak laarzen noodzakelijk. In de winter is bij hoge waterstand het pad door de Grootmeers (zelfs met laarzen) vaak moeilijk begaanbaar. Parkeren langs de toegang naar het jaagpad nabij de Nederzwalmsesteentweg.
