Description

Around the abbey of Herkenrode, the surrounding agricultural land has been converted into ecologically valuable areas and nature has been restored. Wet and dry grasslands, marsh zones, orchards, hedgerows, coppice groves and pools now define the landscape. The meadows and the large pond lined with reeds attract many birds. Among the birds you can see here are Common Shelduck, Garganey, Northern Shoveler, Little Grebe, Great Crested Grebe, Black-necked Grebe, Common Kingfisher, Peregrine Falcon and Great Egret.
